As a rule, avoid restaurants. Eating at home, you have much better control over the ingredients.  Sometimes it is not the main meal, but the extra ingredients in the meal ( i.e. marination, sauce, "special ingredients" etc. that cause weight gain.) Remember, a restaurants job is not for you to lose weight, but to make the food taste good and rich.

When exercising do 50% cardio (like treadmill or jogging) and 50% weight lifting.  The body burns a tremendous amount of calories building muscle.  Once you've built up certain muscle mass, you can worry less about what kind of food you need to eat to maintain your weight.

Prolonged sitting throughout the day increases the risk for diabetes, obesity and heart disease.  This is regardless of whether you engage in a moderate exercise program every day! So if you are sitting at your desk 8 hours per day, even going to a gym 1 hour every day doesn't diminish your risk for heart disease.  The take home message is - keep moving! - do not sit at your desk more than 30 minutes at a time.
